dj mix/mashup: a midnight city classic (Shalamar, Tame Impala, M83, The Knocks)

Made with Logic Pro at 101 bpm Solid four song mix, and we even managed to squeeze in a bridge via Breathe Deeper . I'm so used to thinking I'm almost done with one of these, then hearing something I don't like on the 28th listen, and going back to the drawing board. This came together faster than expected for once. All praise to the mashup gods 🙏 Here's the playlist we drew from

dj mix/mashup: waves go in your eyes (Kanye West, Kool & The Gang, The Weeknd)

Made with Logic Pro at 100 bpm Probably more of a mix/medley than a mashup? My original plan was to build something off mix show episode 48 with In Your Eyes , I Took A Pill in Ibiza and maybe Truffle Butter . But once I cycled through the playlist , it felt right to slowly ramp up the intensity and cap everything off with an obnoxious saxophone solo. Definitely more about the song choice than anything technical. In that regard, probably one of my better efforts from the past several months.

dj mix/mashup: me & u, liberian girl (Cassie, Michael Jackson, Tina Turner)

Made with Logic Pro at 102 bpm If my lazier side had its way, I would've just used the first loop (Me & U instrumental + Liberian Girl instrumental) and the last one (Liberian Girl + What's Love Got To Do With It), copy-pasted over and over, and called it a day. Because those beats go together really well. But that would've been boring after about 45 seconds. So we fleshed it out, and added the vocals plus the hook from Me & U for a little variation and buildup. No question the vocals/hook combo from Liberian Girl or What's Love Got To Do... would've hit harder. But the chords/tone from either one never quite fit with the other instrumentals, so I went a little more conservative. Still turned out ok. Here's the playlist we used , in case you need some inspiration for your own project.

BESO - ROSALÍA, Rauw Alejandro

tempo: 95 bpm the DJ's take: Is this sort of like a Latin version of Closer ? Or maybe Love Me Like You Do . So those are some interesting possible mixes, if you can figure out where to transition in and out. Some other solid options in our 90 to 95 bpm and 95 to 100 bpm playlists. download or stream BESO: amazon

dj mix/mashup: Juicy Roses for the Anti-Hero (Taylor Swift, Notorious B.I.G., The Chainsmokers)

Made with Logic Pro at 97 bpm Songs used: Anti-Hero - Taylor Swift Juicy - The Notorious B.I.G. Roses - The Chainsmokers, ROZES I'll be honest; bought Anti-Hero on amazon by accident (was trying to post the link on djcheatsheet.com and totally butchered it), figured I should do something with my new download. Juicy's my favorite song among the three, so we made that the base, and alternated loops of Anti-Hero and Roses over it. Came out ok I think - the shuffling drums in Juicy can be tricky to beatmatch, so it took a little listening and experimentation to find the right sections for mixing. Here's the playlist of key and bpm-compatible dance tracks we used, in case you feel like making your own version - or something completely different.

I Like You (A Happier Song) - Post Malone, Doja Cat

tempo: 101 bpm the DJ's take: Nice little aesthetic for the video - feels like it could be playing in the background of a bar on a karaoke night, and the letters getting typed out on the bottom remind me of the end of every Doogie Howser episode where he's writing in his journal . As for the music, that intro could sound interesting with Lil Mosey's Blueberry Faygo . The beats are almost like two peas in a pod; a no-brainer combo for a mix or mashup. download or stream I Like You (A Happier Song): amazon dj cheat sheet playlist

dj mix/mashup: too close [next] x midnight city [m83]

Ended up copy-pasting that first little drum-less section of Midnight City to support Too Close without drowning out the vocals. Some good potential for a full mashup, especially knowing the contrast in sound and style. So Sick - Ne-Yo

tempo: 95 bpm the DJ's take:  Song #1 in episode 73 of my dj mix show: I had this transition in my head for awhile. And thanks to technology, it wasn't difficult to manifest: Not bad. On a side note, I broke my arm in seventh grade in a biking accident, and got it re-set after a healthy dose of nitrous oxide - the opening purple background in that video gave me flashbacks to the procedure. Although it wasn't all purple; there were some yellow circles interspersed. Gave me something to focus on aside from the pain. download or stream So Sick: amazon dj cheat sheet playlist

Time to Pretend - MGMT

tempo: 101 bpm The DJ's Take: Track #5 in mix #62 (8:05): I wanted to go a little off-beat in this mix, step outside traditional pop and hiphop, and this one fit the bill. A little on the louder side, and I didn't want to drown out the previous song with the screeching riff at the beginning, so we brought the volume down a little: Bound to bring out the inner-hippie in a crowd; worth a spin for a change of pace. Classic - The Knocks ft. Powers

tempo: 102-103 bpm The DJ's Take: Track #3 in mix #62 (3:51): I imagine that this song is what someone from Japan thinks California sounds and feels like. A thick, full-bodied groove - good chance it'll be louder than other songs in your mix, so the volume may need to come down. Decreased it to -1.2 dB in Logic Pro X : Most importantly (for me): a very healthy vocal-free break at the beginning makes it easy to blend with just about anything. Overall, a solid option to fill a couple minutes in your next set. Some key-compatible music from 100 to 105 bpm: Too Close - Next Levitating - Dua Lipa ft. DaBaby I.F.L.Y. - Bazzi Something Just Like This - The Chainsmokers & Coldplay Paris - The Chainsmokers Kids - OneRepublic I'm In Control - AlunaGeorge Perfect (Matoma Remix) - One Direction Cheyenne - Jason Derulo Midnight City - M83 Cake - Flo Rida & 99 Percent LoveGame - Lady Gaga Breathe Deeper - Tame Impala Madiba Riddim - Drake Sl

Too Close - Next

tempo: 99-100 bpm The DJ's Take: Track #7 in mix #62 (12:54): If you're going down in history as a one-hit wonder, this would be a good one to go out on. Got a lot of play on the local hiphop radio station when I was in high school. The lyrics make me think of that infamous photo of Pitbull getting a little 'too close' to J. Lo during a concert. Too relatable. On the more technical side, the lengthy vocal-free intro makes it easy to mix in for a set or a mashup. Some key-compatible music from 100 to 105 bpm: Levitating - Dua Lipa ft. DaBaby I.F.L.Y. - Bazzi Something Just Like This - The Chainsmokers & Coldplay Paris - The Chainsmokers Kids - OneRepublic I'm In Control - AlunaGeorge Perfect (Matoma Remix) - One Direction Cheyenne - Jason Derulo Classic - The Knocks Midnight City - M83 Cake - Flo Rida & 99 Percent LoveGame - Lady Gaga Breathe Deeper - Tame Impala Madiba Riddim - Drake Sleeping With A Friend - Neon Trees Na

Levitating - Dua Lipa ft. DaBaby

tempo: 103 bpm The DJ's Take: Leadoff track in mix #62 : Song title reminds me of one of Dhalsim's victory celebrations in Street Fighter II: Not many (if any) instrumental-only sections, so it makes sense to blend with another single where the vocalist takes a break or two and gives you some runway. Here's how the transition into Lady Gaga's Alejandro looked in Logic Pro X : Some key-compatible music from 100 to 105 bpm: I.F.L.Y. - Bazzi Something Just Like This - The Chainsmokers & Coldplay Paris - The Chainsmokers Kids - OneRepublic I'm In Control - AlunaGeorge Perfect (Matoma Remix) - One Direction Cheyenne - Jason Derulo Classic - The Knocks Midnight City - M83 Cake - Flo Rida & 99 Percent LoveGame - Lady Gaga Breathe Deeper - Tame Impala Madiba Riddim - Drake Sleeping With A Friend - Neon Trees Nasty Boy - Notorious BIG download or stream Levitating: DJ Cheat Sheet playlist amazon

Summertime - DJ Jazzy Jeff & The Fresh Prince

tempo: 95 bpm The DJ's Take: Song #5 in our #59 mix (12:31): I have to say, the transition out of California Love where these two are playing at the same time may be my new #1 beatmatch in the history of the sterling mercury show. Thought they'd sound good together, but when I threw them into Logic Pro X , they basically melted into each other. Blended pretty well with Let Me Love You too; I didn't really have to do any editing or cutting. Should play well with a wide range of tracks between ~92-98 bpm. Real Love - Mary J. Blige

tempo: 95 bpm The DJ's Take: Song #4 in our chapter 53 mix (6:33): #2 in a series of 3 tracks in this episode with a hiphop vibe and prominent piano in a similar key (following One More Chance and preceding I Wonder ). Had to chop it up a bit to match the beats better, and raised the volume gradually in Logic Pro X : Pretty sure I put this in an old mix cd from the mid 2000s, which got me my share of work back in the day. Worth a long-term spot in the rotation; it's aged well. Some other key-compatible music: Crockett's Theme - Jan Hammer Closer - Nine Inch Nails Back to Sleep - Chris Brown Watermelon Sugar - Harry Styles Starboy - The Weeknd, Daft Punk Delicate - Taylor Swift Stir Fry - Migos Gorgeous - Taylor Swift Unpretty - TLC Suena El Dembow - Joey Montana, Sebastián Yatra Pendulum - Katy Perry SUBEME LA RADIO - Enrique Iglesias All We Know - The Chainsmokers No Games - Serani Out of the Woods - Taylor Swift This Is How We Do - Kat

If - Janet Jackson

Speed: 105-106 bpm The DJ's Take: Song #10 in our edition 57 mix (27:10): Best part of this track: healthy chunks of vocal-free instrumental to cut out and play with. I used one piece to create a smoother transition between If and Charli XCX & Rita Ora's Doing It in Logic Pro X : It's basically rock infused with hiphop / r&b; a genre-bending classic that was all over MTV and pop radio in my early teen years. Solid choice for a 90s set.
