Music Review: Honey - Mariah Carey

Speed: 96 bpm

The DJ’s Take: First off, if you’re not a big Eddie Griffin fan, go to about 1:58 in the video for the actual song. Former #1 single from the late 90s, and you can mix it with Obsessed if you slow this down a little. Not going to set the floor on fire, but a good solid track that can keep things moving.

Music Review: Down - Jay Sean ft. Lil Wayne

Speed: 132 bpm

The DJ’s Take: Somehow when I hear this, I feel like I’m listening to Radio Disney. But the hook is catchy, and it’s already a hit on the pop charts and radio. 130 beats per minute seems to be the magic number these days for club hits, and this one fits right in, so put it in rotation.

On a side note for dj’s, this might sound good with Hotel Room Service, since they’re in the same general key.

Music Review: 75, Brazil Street - Nicola Fasano vs. Pat-Rich

Speed: 128 bpm

The DJ’s Take: If you’re like me, you’ve played Calle Ocho to death, and you’re looking to extend the mix. One way is to get the hot club track that Pitbull jacked the beat from. Use this to build the crowd up for when you play the top 40 track they know and love.

Music Review: Waterfalls - TLC

Speed: 86 bpm

The DJ’s Take: One of my top 10 favorite songs from high school. I am a fool for rich guitar riffs and muted trumpets, whether real or synthesized. A classic track from one of the great female groups of the last 20 years. If you play or enjoy 90s rap and R&B, this is a must-have.

Music Review: I Wanna Dance With Somebody - Whitney Houston

Speed: 119 bpm

The DJ’s Take: If you spin 80s at all, you need to have this one in rotation. Simple as that. Easily the track I get asked for the most when I go retro, and singalongability is an 11 on a scale of 1 to 10. True, the dudes may involuntarily cringe when this comes on, but they’ll change their tune when the ladies start breaking out and getting down.

Music Review: Halo - Beyoncé (Dave Audé Club Remix)

Speed: 128 bpm

The DJ’s Take: Seems like there are a few remixes for Halo, but I like this one the best. Good strong beat, it’s in the same key as the original, and definitely more danceable. Also, at ~9 minutes long, you can drop this and take a little breather if needed.

Here’s a link where you can download the mp3 of the original, if that’s what you like: Halo (81 bpm)
