Music Review: Replay - IYAZ

Speed: 92 bpm

The DJ’s Take: Let me paint you a picture - I am a character on The Hills. More specifically, I am the Asian male heartthrob playa who’s been going through females like Hollywood Halloween candy. But one day, a girl comes along who makes me want to change my ways. As I’m driving down the freeway in my drop top after a triumphant first date at some overpriced Asian fusion place, wind blowing through my hair, I want this song playing as the soundtrack.

Seriously though, this single shows you what light, breezy pop can be when you do it right. Nothing revolutionary, but very easy on the ears. Also, this track is already around the top 20 on the Billboard Hot 100, and I can see it sticking around in the top 10 for awhile. So turn off your brain and put this one on repeat.

Throwback Track: Doo Wop (That Thing) - Lauryn Hill

Speed: 100 bpm

The DJ’s Take: Remember the days when MTV showed videos at times when normal people could watch them? Just over a decade ago, The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill cleaned up at the Grammies, and this single was its biggest hit. If you spin or listen to hiphop and R&B from when it was still good and soulful, this has to be on your playlist. The industry needs truly talented artists like Lauryn Hill to step up again and re-legitimize the genre. Until then, all we have are memories. Download this track and reminisce.

New Music: Black Morning - UrbanRockBand

We go pop a lot here at Beat Match City, but today we’re putting the spotlight on a new single from a new artist. Black Morning by BK-based hiphop group UrbanRockBand is a fresh track with a deep tribal vibe. I couldn’t get that bass guitar riff out of my head this morning. These people are working hard to promote their music to the masses, and they’ve got a lot to offer. It’s good to hear performers drop the manufactured beats and mix in real instruments once in awhile. Props to Sdaerd and “Lucky” Logan P. McCoy for bringing hiphop back to its roots.

To learn more about the band and their music, visit UrbanRockBand.com.

If you’re a new artist, dj, producer, or performer looking to promote your music, send an email with a link to a video or sound clip of your single and a little info about yourself. All emails will be responded to, and we’ll see what we can do to promote you. Check under the “new artists” tag on the left side of this page for new music from talented artists on the rise.

Music Review: Meet Me Halfway - Black Eyed Peas

Speed: 131 bpm

The DJ’s Take: Somewhere in LA or NYC, Madonna’s lawyer is listening to this song and wondering whether he/she can sue for copyright infringement. This will be a hit for 3 key reasons:
  1. People like the 80s.
  2. People like Madonna.
  3. People like Black Eyed Peas.
I’m already getting requests for this, so I’ll probably download it for the coming weekend. You should too.

Music Review: 3 - Britney Spears

Speed: 136 bpm

The DJ’s Take: Even if you didn’t major in math, you know that Britney Spears + Slick Electronic Beat = Hit. This is catchy, and I think it’ll do well with the female booty-shaking demographic. DJ’s - a little too fast to mix with the current string of 130 bpm hits, but slow it down a little and you can make it work.
