Music Review: Holding You Down (Goin In Circles) - Jazmine Sullivan

Speed: 95 bpm

The DJ’s Take: Sometimes bringing it back to the old[er] school can get people excited, but only if it’s well-done. And in this case, I feel like they just indiscriminately threw some samples together (not unlike a KFC Famous Bowl), added some out-of-place scratching, and hoped the kids would like the “retro” sound.

But like Jenny from the Block back in the day, which did a little damage on the charts in spite of J. Lo’s obvious lack of talent, you can’t get around the fact that Holding You Down is bastardized. At least Jazmine Sullivan can sing, and I thought the guitar sample from The Firm’s Affirmative Action was kind of cool. Otherwise, let’s hope whoever produced this track goes back to the lab and comes back with a stronger effort next time.
