Music Review: Erase Me - Kid Cudi ft. Kanye West

Speed: 93 bpm

The DJ’s Take: I would tell you what I think about this song, but I fell asleep about 30 seconds in. That said, it’s safe to say that we should leave singing to the professionals, and sleepy, angsty rock to the hipsters. Interestingly enough, if you listen to the key and look at the bpm, you could actually integrate this with Hot Tottie and the world famous 10 song mix we’ve been working on. Bottom line - it’s ok to put on a mixtape, but I wouldn’t play it live.

Music Review: 2012 (It Ain't The End) - Jay Sean ft. Nicki Minaj

Speed: 127 bpm

The DJ’s Take: On a musical level, this one’s a yawner, especially for a dance track in that 125 bpm to 130 bpm range. But there are a couple interesting things to note.

First off, why 2012? Is he excited about the Olympics? Does his boy have a really hot 16 year old sister who’s been giving him the eye? Someone enlighten me.

Secondly, Nicki Minaj tossed aside her overdone black Snooki persona to drop a decent guest verse on this one. For awhile, I couldn’t understand why she’s gotten so much hype, but now I can sort of see and hear it. It’s sort of like Ke$ha going acoustic and actually singing instead of screeching - sort of strange, but certainly a welcome development.

Music Review: Deuces - Chris Brown ft. Tyga and Kevin McCall

Speed: 74 bpm

The DJ’s Take: We’re over the fact that Chris Brown hit Rihanna, right? Ok; good. Because despite the fact that he’s a bully, you have to respect the talent. And this new single is smooth. Even the guest verses are solid. Probably not loud or fast enough to make it into the Top 10, but in another era with another artist, Deuces could’ve been a contender.

Music Review: Hot Tottie - Usher ft. Jay-Z

Speed: 88 bpm

The DJ’s Take: According to GroupRecipes.com, a hot tottie is a remedy for the common cold that’s made up of hot tea with lemon, honey, cinnamon and whiskey. And given that context, this song makes a lot more sense to me. Not that there’s anything deep to be gleaned from the lyrics - this is a straight club single.

It feels electronic, but it isn’t 125 bpm or higher. So we’ll see if the people can still get down to dance music that isn’t on E. Personally, I like this, and I think the mainstream crowd will too. Try it for yourself.

Music Review: Teach Me How To Dougie - Cali Swag District

Speed: 85 bpm

The DJ’s Take: I hear about people getting down to this single all the time, and I believe it, but I’ve never seen it firsthand when I’ve spun it. That said, it’s easy to mix in, and a relatively safe play in that 80 bpm to 85 bpm range, especially if you play the clean version. Not sure if it ever breaks into the Mt. Rushmore of songs about special dances, but I’m betting it’s already beaten out the Stanky Legg.
