Music Review: Fancy - Drake ft. T.I. and Swizz Beatz

Speed: 88 bpm

The DJ’s Take: Another solid beat from Swizzy featuring a chipmunk soul sample. I think I kind of like it because it feels like something that would’ve come out of NYC circa 9/11, which is around when I started djing. It is rising on the charts, and it could conceivably get into the 20s on the Billboard Hot 100 because everybody loves Drake. Try it for yourself and take your crowd back to those last couple years before hiphop started consistently biting.

Music Review: F**k You - Cee Lo Green

Speed: 128 bpm

The DJ’s Take: If you’ve been reading the web over the past few weeks, you know all the buzz surrounding this song. Personally, I can hear why, but I think it’s a little overrated. Take away Cee Lo Green’s voice and the words “F*ck You” and you have a track from the Jonas Brothers or that TV show Glee. Then again, maybe that’s the whole point.

Either way, my guess is your crowd knows this song too, and you can mix in a few other songs to get them going (see below). There’s a censored version of this track, but come on - that’s like taking the Jack out of a Jack and Coke.

The BMC Weekly Top 5 for 9/1/10 to 9/7/10

After the first week of September, we have some new faces in the BMC Top 5. Here’s the leaderboard after Lap 1, based on reader feedback:

1. Love the Way You Lie - Eminem ft. Rihanna

2. Right Above It - Lil Wayne

3. Magic - B.o.B ft. Rivers Cuomo

4. Airplanes - B.o.B ft. Hayley Williams

5. Just the Way You Are - Bruno Mars

Interestingly enough, no pop EDM tracks on this week’s list. Are we witnessing the end of an era? Stay tuned.

Throwback Track: Like A Prayer - Madonna

Speed: 112 bpm

The DJ’s Take: As Marvin Gaye and Tammi Terrell once sang, ain’t nothing like the real thing, baby. We covered one of a few dance remixes/remakes not too long ago, but nothing matches the original in terms of sheer chemical effect within the female anatomy. Safest play is at a wedding or estrogen-heavy party, but even if it doesn’t work out, you have a couple more gender-neutral options to mix in (see below).

Music Review: Miss Me - Drake ft. Lil Wayne

Speed: 77 bpm

The DJ’s Take: It’s not often that I actually pay attention to lyrics in a rap track, unless they’re really bad, or really good. And I raised my eyebrows a little when I heard “Drake just stand for Do Right And Kill Everything.” He’s still overrated in my book, but moments like that make me think he could be really good one day. Miss Me is mixable with a couple other well-known, but older tracks (see below), although you’ll have to speed it up a little. People do request Drake from time to time, so it doesn’t hurt to have this one on hand.
