Music Review: Whip My Hair - Willow Smith

Speed: 81.5 bpm

The DJ’s Take: Top rappers like Drake, Ludacris and Lil Wayne should listen to tracks like this and feel ashamed of themselves. Because it proves you can take a generic hiphop beat, put a 9 year old girl over it, and people still like it. Think I’m exaggerating? Check out Lil Wayne and T-Pain’s Got Money - similar bpm, and a worse instrumental in basically the same key. Further proof of what a joke rap has become in the last couple of decades. As for this song, the video’s a little creepy, but it’s not bad. Looks like the daughter inherited some of her dad’s talent.

Throwback Track: Goodies - Ciara ft. Petey Pablo

Speed: 102 bpm

The DJ’s Take: Someone recently reminded me that in the year and a half I’ve been doing this blog, we haven’t covered a Ciara song yet, so here you go. If my memory’s correct, this was the single that put her on the map, and it’s sort of a relic from the mid 00s when Lil Jon was producing big hits like Get Low and Yeah! Anyway, I didn’t like Goodies when it came out, but now I understand. Certainly worth a place in your digital crate, especially if you’re working on a 100 bpm to 105 bpm hiphop mix.

Music Review: Aston Martin Music - Rick Ross ft. Drake and Chrisette Michele

Speed: 86 bpm

The DJ’s Take: If I were a rap artist, I would be coming out with tracks like Honda Accord Music, or maybe Lincoln Towncar Music if I was feeling fancy. In other words, I don’t know what it’s like to ride in an Aston Martin, but this song makes me imagine that it’s pretty nice. I could see this being a strong choice for an urban-themed lounge, or an 85 bpm hiphop mixtape.
