Know your demographic. Play accordingly.
Collect your money by the end of the night.
Put out a tip jar for the drunk & generous.
When in doubt, play pop EDM in the 125 to 130 bpm range.

The DJ's Take: You know, it sounds sort of strange when you have a pop dance track featuring a guy who can actually sing. Aren't these songs meant to either feature cold, stoic performances or auto-tuned vocals from starlets who can't do it on their own? The beat seems a little light, and having Usher evoke emotions is a little different, but I like it.

But it's a pop EDM track with some personality that's at least on par with everything else on the charts. That said, if you injected me with estrogen, maybe I'd feel it a little more. And it is good to see Royce Da 5'9 back at it; haven't heard from him since Boom. Finally, you can mix it with a couple more respectable tracks (see below).

I think maybe she's gotten to the point where she believes she's teflon. And the saxophone part makes it even worse - did she hire that Careless Whisper guy to play it?

I seriously cringed after listening to this dude channel his inner-Belafonte for the first 30 seconds; makes you wonder if the songwriter was listening to 6 foot 7 foot and said "Hey - I think I'll grab a different, more recognizable part of that Day-O song." Then the producer goes and jacks the beat from one of my favorite dance hits from the 90s. A perfect example of how lazy the music industry and its listeners can get.

The DJ's Take: Don't really know what to make of this track. On one hand, you get the feeling Rihanna can do no wrong on the charts, and an island vibe is good for summertime. On the other hand, while I'm no expert, the reggae beat sounds contrived to me. Also, when she goes rum-puh-puh-pum a couple times, it makes me think of Dave Chappelle's imitation of Dylan from Making the Band and I have a hard time keeping a straight face.

The DJ's Take: For people like me who were teens in the 90s, it's strange to see Chris Brown dedicating this song to MJ when he basically jacked the beat from SWV's Human Nature-sampling Right Here. Then again, you got a lot of young folk who probably have no idea who SWV is, so it's understandable. Anyway, it's basically Chris Brown singing over an instrumental of a major hit from 1993. And I kind of like it despite the fact that it's jacked.

If you're looking to go old(er) school, try mixing this and Right Here with Nas' It Ain't Hard To Tell (which also samples Human Nature).

Once again, Black and Yellow's our dominant single. What's interesting is that 90 bpm was the top beats per minute for the month. Maybe it's the fact that Just Can't Get Enough starts around that 90-95 bpm range. Or maybe people are looking for a little variety with all the dance tracks out there these days. In any case, I'm thinking maybe we'll see some more 70 to 75 bpm songs in there in the near future. Stay tuned.

The DJ’s Take: It's pleasant enough, but who's to say that this couldn't have been done by a tween pop singer? Or Kid Cudi? If this continues to get popular, I could see Kidz Bop doing a pretty authentic-sounding cover in the near future.
