Throwback Thursday: 1999 - Prince

Speed: 119 bpm

Recommended bpm range: 115 to 120 bpm

The DJ's Take: Very rare that I get any kind of a rise when a legend dies. But with MJ and Whitney Houston, we sort of saw it coming, right? Prince seemed more like some alien who would live forever. Anyway, this was a staple of my music collection back when I spun an 80s night. And you're pretty much guaranteed to get requests for 1999 (and just about any other big song he did) this weekend and probably next weekend as well. A must-download.

If you're at around 115 bpm, try mixing with key-compatible tracks like:

Tik Tok - Ke$ha
Ain't Nobody (Loves Me Better) - Felix Jaehn ft. Jasmine Thompson
I Don't Like It, I Love It - Flo Rida
Love Never Felt So Good - Michael Jackson
All My Love (Remix) - Major Lazer
Motown Philly - Boyz II Men
Uptown Funk - Mark Ronson ft. Bruno Mars

If you're at 120+, try mixing with tracks like:

Nocturnal - Disclosure ft. The Weeknd
Book of Love - Felix Jaehn
New Romantics - Taylor Swift
I Really Like You - Carly Rae Jepsen
Let Me Love You - NeYo

Lucky You - Eminem ft. Joyner Lucas

tempo: 76-77 bpm bpm range: 75 bpm  to  80 bpm the dj's take: I was wondering why the phrase 'Lucky You' sounded familiar... then remembered my Lucky Brand jeans say this behind the zipper: So let's say you're on a date. Things are going well, relations commence, and your companion sees that message. Cute? Or a mood killer? Either way, that's a lot of bravado to live up to. Brings to mind Brick Tamland in Anchorman: As for the track, try mixing with: Bam - Jay-Z ft. Damian Marley PIE - Future ft. Chris Brown Stitches - Shawn Mendes download or stream Lucky You: amazon itunes

ROCKSTAR - DaBaby ft. Roddy Ricch

tempo: 90 bpm The DJ's Take: Song #1 in our chapter 51 mix (made in Logic Pro X ): Big bass, so I had to be strategic about where to transition out and into Rihanna's Work . A little more of an in-depth look, plus some thoughts on its shelf life in a dj's rotation: Bottom line, when nightlife at college bars picks up again, this will likely be in heavy rotation.
