Made with Logic Pro at 95 bpm The mission for this one was take the drum-only intro to Juicy Fruit (sampled prominently in Notorious B.I.G.'s Juicy), find some drum-less loops from various songs in this playlist and this one , lay them over each other, and hope for the best. I think I did alright with the build-up, and the heavy guitar in Kanye's Gorgeous is a worthwhile pay-off.

I'd been wanting to lay that percussion-less intro to Ed Sheeran's Bad Habits over something, and it was nice to finally get around to it. Made with Logic Pro at 98 bpm Credit for this one goes to the youtube algorithm - didn't know Rise was the sample used in Hypnotize until a week ago. But once I isolated the famous break and went through a couple playlists on djcheatsheet.com , it all came together fairly quickly. Especially after hearing Aphex Twin's Ageispolis and knowing right away they would sound good together. One of my favorite mashups in recent months. Especially the ending - feels good to finish strong.

Made with Logic Pro at 101 bpm Quiet summer, but I had this in the back of my mind, and finally put something together. Wasn't as smooth a process as some other mixes/mashups ; tried to shoehorn in Kanye's Diamonds from Sierra Leone at the end (the beginning where Shirley Bassey sings 'diamonds are forever' ), but the backing instrumental was off-beat vs. the other songs, so we scrapped it. Wish I knew of a good way to fully isolate vocals from the beat in an individual song. Overall, I probably listened to this one too many times with headphones on. Started hearing how pitches in the different songs were a bit incompatible at times, but at a certain point you just say 'good enough.' Hopefully this is an interesting addition to the waves of Not Like Us mashups out there.

Made with Logic Pro at 65 bpm Overall, we took a few songs from this playlist and this playlist , and had them meet in the middle at 65 bpm. I could listen to the chorus for Someone to Love on repeat, which basically sums up the entire second half of this mix. And a quick note - that zooming sound at 1:24 in the leadup to Someone to Love is called "Descending Below" in Logic Pro. Pretty good for transitions, and loud enough that you don't have to jack up the volume over your mix.

We added in a couple extra songs from the original loop, and to make the transitions a little less abrupt, I put in some sound effects ("Boomerang Downer" and "Airfield" as software instruments in Logic Pro, in case you were wondering). Individual software instruments can get drowned out by finished audio tracks side-by-side, but things worked out in this one.

Made with Logic Pro at 69 bpm So I've been sitting on this since early December; an example of a mix I wasn't really happy with, but sank enough hours into, and thought there was still something interesting there. Sound feels a bit thin, not enough bass (loops I chose either didn't have enough or had so much that I adjusted the EQ to tone it down), and the drums are a bit much - or not enough - depending on the headphones you're using. On a side note: none of these songs really fit into any of the playlists on djcheatsheet.com melodically, and I didn't want to make a separate 3 song list, so these will be floating on their own island for now. Tried to integrate a third song and it just wasn't working for me, so I spent more time cutting/reshuffling N****s in Paris. And in the process, I learned that Jay-Z is saying 'ball so hard muthaf****s wanna fine me,' not 'ball so hard muthaf****s wanna find me' like I always thought - not to mention my misinterpretation of the slowed-down version as 'this is how muthaf****s wanna find me.' My original plan was to build something off mix show episode 48 with In Your Eyes , I Took A Pill in Ibiza and maybe Truffle Butter . But once I cycled through the playlist , it felt right to slowly ramp up the intensity and cap everything off with an obnoxious saxophone solo. Definitely more about the song choice than anything technical. In that regard, probably one of my better efforts from the past several months.

Made with Logic Pro at 68 bpm What started as a transition between songs in mix #55 of the sterling mercury show in September 2020 has finally evolved into something closer to fully-fledged. Always liked how these two sounded together, and finally figured out that Can't Get Enough was the perfect third wheel for what I was trying to build. Made with Logic Pro at 102 bpm If my lazier side had its way, I would've just used the first loop (Me & U instrumental + Liberian Girl instrumental) and the last one (Liberian Girl + What's Love Got To Do With It), copy-pasted over and over, and called it a day. Because those beats go together really well. But that would've been boring after about 45 seconds. So we fleshed it out, and added the vocals plus the hook from Me & U for a little variation and buildup. No question the vocals/hook combo from Liberian Girl or What's Love Got To Do... would've hit harder. But the chords/tone from either one never quite fit with the other instrumentals, so I went a little more conservative. Still turned out ok. Made with Logic Pro at 125 bpm I think Logic Pro is slowly getting better - tried mixing Ride Like The Wind and Backstabbers weeks ago, and the beats just weren't locking in place like I wanted (which is something you can run into with 70s/80s songs). Tried again last week, didn't do anything different, and the result finally matched the vision. Moral of the story: if it doesn't work at first, give the developers some time and try again. I was planning to put out something a couple weeks ago, but it got completely blocked on youtube because my original version featured Beyoncé's Sorry. So I went back to the drawing board, kept Say So and the Cupid instrumental, and re-worked something new revolving around an 80s hit that's been sampled a lot . The cool thing about I Wonder If I Take You Home is that the beat features a few vocal-free breaks & variations, so you can cut out a couple different loops and avoid repeating the same section over and over again. I actually had a longer version of this where I mixed break up with your girlfriend and Duran Duran's Come Undone ; they sound good together, but it felt extraneous, so I cut that out. And in case you were wondering - the blinking light in the intro to the video was a decoration at a bar I wandered into in downtown Seattle a couple months ago. My favorite part may be at the end where it's just Lost and Hung Up, and Hung Up is building up into the drop - just learned today that it's a sample from this ABBA song (about 19 seconds in) . As always, got all the music off my own djcheatsheet.com 120 to 125 bpm playlist, although the final version clocked in at 118 bpm. Why? My mind was probably just on auto-pilot, but everything sounded ok in the end.
