Problem - Ariana Grande ft. Iggy Azalea

Speed: 103 bpm

The DJ's Take: Sort of a tough one to analyze. On one hand, the buzz is big and this could be high on the charts from the start. On the other hand, who's driving that demand? My guess - tweens, teens and young college students. So be selective where you spin it, especially if you're not getting direct requests (prom, graduation parties, and dorm parties may make the most sense). Plus, it's hard to say how long this will stay hot, so monitor the charts and the radio play from time to time.

As for the song, I'm not really into it. Sounds like a girl trying to act like a woman (pretty typical for a Disney star being marketed to the crowd she's growing up with), and it's a bit awkward and overdone. Then again, I didn't think much of Talk Dirty, so what do I know. As for mix/mashup recommendations, there's only one track I can think of that really matches key-wise and beat-wise (and you'll have to bump Problem down a few bpm's) - Thrift Shop by Macklemore. But you've got a lot of options in the 100 bpm to 105 bpm range, so I wouldn't be too picky. In any case, if you spin pop and Top 40, this one is probably worth the investment, at least in the short-term.

tempo: 93 bpm bpm range: 90 to 95 bpm The DJ's Take: Song #6 in our chapter 53 mix (11:38): As we saw with the I Wonder lead-in, that percussion-only intro makes this easier to mix and to play around with. Also melts nicely into Nine Inch Nails' Closer . In fact, even though I know when the transition's coming, it still creeps up on me a bit. Still worth a spot in your prime-time pop rotation. Makes sense for the younger listeners and their shorter attention spans. And as a producer / songwriter, you can take three half-finished attempts at a single, then mash them together to make a hit.
