Big Pimpin Instrumental (How to make your own with Logic Pro)

Made with Logic Pro at 68 bpm Quick video on making a vocal-free instrumental from the original song. A little background: back when I was spinning vinyl (around 2002-2006), it was common to buy a single, and the single would come with an instrumental. Here's an example from my collection: Not as simple today, because those voice-free beats are hard (if not impossible) to find - as far as I know. Luckily, software like Logic Pro makes it easier to sift through a song, find the parts you like, then cut them out and loop them to make your own instrumental. In the case of Jay-Z's Big Pimpin, it's easy to just take the first few bars and call it a day. But for the purposes of a mix, remix or mashup, I wanted to find slightly quieter, flute-free bars that don't overwhelm the other tracks we're using. In this video, I found a couple pieces toward the tail end of the song and turned them into a 56 second mix with Day N Nite and What's Poppin.

dj mix/mashup: Can't Get Enough Money Trees (ft. J. Cole, Kendrick Lamar and Jack Harlow)

Made with Logic Pro at 68 bpm What started as a transition between songs in mix #55 of the sterling mercury show in September 2020 has finally evolved into something closer to fully-fledged. Always liked how these two sounded together, and finally figured out that Can't Get Enough was the perfect third wheel for what I was trying to build. Maybe one day we'll add even more, but this is about as good as I can do for now. Songs taken from this dj cheat sheet playlist - in case you feel like making your own mix.

dj mix/mashup: Rich Flex x I'd Do Anything To Make You Smile x 734 (Drake, 21 Savage, Jack Harlow, Juice WRLD)

Made with Logic Pro at 77 bpm Songs used: Rich Flex - Drake, 21 Savage I'd Do Anything to Make You Smile - Jack Harlow 734 - Juice WRLD Simple enough construction - take the female vocals from the beginning of Rich Flex, the basic guitar riff from 734, and lay them over the backbone of the vocal-free beat in I'd Do Anything to Make You Smile. In fact, there were a couple loop-able instrumental-only sections in I'd Do Anything..., which you'll hear in this little mix/mashup. Some other interesting key- and bpm-compatible songs in this playlist ; I only used 3, but there's definitely more to work with in there.

DJ mix/mashup: Higher Down in the DM (Yo Gotti, Drake, Baauer & Just Blaze ft. Jay-Z, Jack Harlow)

Made with Logic Pro at 77 bpm As I start to do more of these, the more I understand the acronym that my third grade teacher used to say on a regular basis: K.I.S.S. Keep it simple, stupid. In this case, don't stack 4 or 5 different tracks on top of each other. These songs are individual creations, not components in whatever a dummy like me is trying to put together. Basslines can clash unintentionally, loud on top of loud can create distortion, etc. Takes some more thought than I expected. Different from mixes where you're holding a beatmatch for maybe 30 seconds at most during a transition from one song into the next. Anyway, this one came out alright once we simplified things. Second half is Baauer's Higher mixed with the drum-less intro to Drake's Headlines, then blended over the drum-less intro to Jack Harlow's Nail Tech, and finally we bring in the end of Nail Tech. Interesting note on the ending to Nail Tech - sounds a bit like Kanye's Flashing Ligh...

DJ mix/mashup: flying first class to mardi gras (Jack Harlow, Bob James, Avicii, Maroon 5)

Made with Logic Pro at 107 bpm Jack Harlow's First Class and Bob James' Take Me to the Mardi Gras are the real centerpieces of this one. An unconventional pairing, to be sure. But that's why I tried it out. And as soon as we threw them together, the combination sounded pretty interesting. If you've never heard of that Bob James track before, hopefully it sounds familiar at least. Very popular hiphop sample , especially in the late 80s and into the 90s. That little drum break in part II of this mix/mashup is a classic - featured prominently in Missy Elliott's Work It, which we dropped into Mix Show #74 . Also, for those who didn't know - Bob James made Nautilus (another heavily-used sample) and the theme to the tv show Taxi , among others. A literal legacy that lives on in other people's music. Anyway, we closed our little piece out with the little guitar riff from Avicii's Friend of Mine. I was planning to use Maroon 5 and SZA's What Lovers D...

INDUSTRY BABY - Lil Nas X, Jack Harlow

tempo: 75 bpm bpm range: 65 bpm  to  70 bpm ,  70 bpm  to  75 bpm the dj's take: Song #1 in our mix 66 : Almost followed this up with Everyone Nose , but at 74 bpm, that one sounded a little too sped up. Maybe next time; strong mashup potential. I chose Right Above It for the horns, and while the transition is a little noisy, everything turned out alright - brightens the mood a bit, and sets up the next couple tracks nicely. Try mixing with: Kiss Kiss - Chris Brown, T-Pain What You Know - T.I. WHATS POPPIN - Jack Harlow

tempo: 72-73 bpm bpm range: 70 bpm  to  75 bpm the dj's take: The leadoff song in our #55 mix : That transition into Kendrick Lamar's Money Trees is pretty satisfying. Was thinking Can't Hold Us could work because both tracks have pianos, but I don't regret my decision. Catchy beat; I give this my middle-aged man seal of approval. Try mixing with: I'm Upset - Drake Black Beatles - Rae Sremmurd Relationship - Young Thug ft. Future DNA. - Kendrick Lamar Party - Chris Brown ft. Usher, Gucci Mane Big Pimpin - Jay-Z ft.
