dj mix/mashup: Someone To Pour It Up (Aaliyah, Mariah Carey, Jon B. ft. Babyface, Rihanna)

Made with Logic Pro at 65 bpm Overall, we took a few songs from this playlist and this playlist , and had them meet in the middle at 65 bpm. I could listen to the chorus for Someone to Love on repeat, which basically sums up the entire second half of this mix. And a quick note - that zooming sound at 1:24 in the leadup to Someone to Love is called "Descending Below" in Logic Pro. Pretty good for transitions, and loud enough that you don't have to jack up the volume over your mix.

dj mix/mashup: Levels N 2 Deep (Avicii, Drake, SZA, Shawn Mendes)

Made with Logic Pro at 125 bpm Another project with origins in an old mix . We added in a couple extra songs from the original loop, and to make the transitions a little less abrupt, I put in some sound effects ("Boomerang Downer" and "Airfield" as software instruments in Logic Pro, in case you were wondering). Individual software instruments can get drowned out by finished audio tracks side-by-side, but things worked out in this one.

Under The Influence - Chris Brown

tempo: 58-59 bpm the DJ's take: Two notable sections if you're using this for a mashup: first ~16 seconds for a drum-free instrumental, and 1:05-1:22 for an instrumental with percussion. Take either of them, turn into a loop for as long as needed, and that's a fun ingredient for something bigger. Could sound interesting with Never Be Like You - Flume, Kai , Pursuit of Happiness - Kid Cudi, MGMT, Ratatat , Señorita - Camila Cabello, Shawn Mendes or Everything We Need - Kanye West, Ty Dolla $ign, Ant Clemons [58-59 bpm] , off the top of my head. Full playlist is here , so try it out and see what other combinations you come up with. download or stream Under the Influence: amazon

Unholy - Sam Smith ft. Kim Petras

tempo: 65-66 bpm the DJ's take: This one makes me think of M.I.A.'s Bad Girls (~72 bpm) with the Far/Middle Eastern chord progression. I haven't tried it yet, but put both of them at ~69 bpm and that could be an interesting mashup possibility. Try mixing with songs in these playlists: 60 to 65 bpm , 65 to 70 , and 70 to 75 f (for songs are in the low 70s). download or stream Unholy: amazon

abcdefu - GAYLE

speed: 61.5 bpm the dj’s take:  Song #1 in episode 71 : Remember when you first learned curse words, then got confident enough to use them around your friends? Yeah; this one is definitely for a younger crowd excited for adulthood. But even if it's not for me, I still gotta go after the algorithm sometimes, right? Transition into SZA's Good Days was a little trickier than expected - I had to chop it a up a little to really match the beats. You Right - Doja Cat ft. The Weeknd

tempo: 65 bpm the dj's take: Song #3 in #64 (4:34): Blends nicely with Disclosure's Birthday . This one's loud and heavy though; I had to drop the decibel level a little to match the rest of the mix. Here's how it looked in Logic Pro X (-1.8 dB): Some other key-compatible music: Say My Name - Destiny's Child Birthday - Disclosure, Kehlani & Syd Any Time, Any Place - Janet Jackson Psycho - Post Malone ft. Never Be Like You - Flume ft. Kai

Speed: 60 bpm Recommended bpm range: 60 bpm to 65 bpm The DJ's Take: Leadoff song in mix 36 : Pretty seamless integration with Pursuit of Happiness - Kid Cudi ft. MGMT, Ratatat ; worth trying out as you're building up the energy in a pop set - or winding things down. Hopefully he'll be better known for this than his affinity for peaches . Update: Used this as track #2 in mix 60 (1:02): May have brought this one in a little abruptly, but good enough. I do like the transition going into Save Your Tears - The Weeknd - double up the tempo, and it sounds a little warped/trippy. I played around with the volume a few times before moving on. Some other key-compatible tracks: Out of Touch - Hall & Oates Everything We Need - Kanye West, Ant Clemons, Ty Dolla $ign Never Be Like You - Flume ft. Everything We Need - Kanye West, Ant Clemons, Ty Dolla $ign

tempo: 58-59 bpm The DJ's Take: Song #1 in our #60 mix: If I ever went to church, this would be the kind of pre-service music I'd want playing as people filed in and sat down. Simple, upbeat, and when you've got soft organs playing and Ty Dolla $ign on the chorus, that's a recipe for success. Worth a spot in the rotation as an early tone-setter. Some other key-compatible music: Never Be Like You - Flume ft. Kai Save Your Tears - The Weeknd Still The Same - Bob Seger Bad Romance - Lady Gaga Safe and Sound - Capital Cities New Rules - Dua Lipa SexyBack - Justin Timberlake Circles - Post Malone Señorita - Shawn Mendes & Camila Cabello Faking It - Calvin Harris ft. U Got It Bad - Usher

tempo: 62 bpm The DJ's Take: Song #8 in 7squared (15:59): Is there any easier mix / mashup than this and Burn ? Almost like Usher delivered twins. If you're going from U Got It Bad into Burn, that guitar solo starting around 3:04 is a good spot to start the transition. Some other key-compatible music: Believer - Imagine Dragons Ghosts N Stuff - deadmau5 The Box - Roddy Ricch Dark Horse - Katy Perry ft. Juicy J Bad and Boujee - Migos ft. Lil Uzi Vert My Way - Fetty Wap ft. Monty DEVASTATED - Joey Bada$$ download or stream U Got It Bad: spotify playlist amazon

THE SCOTTS - THE SCOTTS, Travis Scott & Kid Cudi

tempo: 65 bpm the dj's take: The leadoff song in mix 50 : Moves along at a plodding pace; almost like a trippy modern day funeral march. Took a little time to find the right spot to pick up the energy (about 2:04 in), but I think we did it. Va Va Voom was a good follow-up because of the quieter intro and a similar synth sound. A big hit at the moment, and I'm sure the youth can figure out a creative way to move to it. Bad and Boujee - Migos ft. Lil Uzi Vert

tempo: 63.5 bpm bpm range:   60 bpm  to  65 bpm The DJ's Take: Song #5 in 7squared (8:52): Can't lie - this one kind of puts me in a trance and makes my eyelids a little heavy. Probably gets a better reception on hiphop nights in Southern venues. Shelf-life is questionable, but in the right circumstances, I'm sure it still works. Try mixing with key-compatible tracks like: The Box - Roddy Ricch Ghosts N Stuff - deadmau5 Dark Horse - Katy Perry ft. Juicy J Believer - Imagine Dragons Bad and Boujee - Migos ft. The Box - Roddy Ricch

tempo: 59 bpm The DJ's Take: Song #1 in 7squared : Glad I don't listen to the radio anymore, because this has probably been as overplayed as any single in history. Still, if you're bringing out the heavy artillery for a pop set, this one needs to be in the rotation. Violins add a dramatic flair to the proceedings. dj mix: 7squared (ft. Usher, Roddy Ricch & deadmau5)

Made with Logic Pro X at 63 bpm 22:10 of hiphop, pop and r&b Editor's Note: Why did we call this 7squared? Simple - to prove to the people my mastery of elementary school math. Kanye - The Chainsmokers ft. SirenXX

tempo: 64 bpm, 128 bpm The DJ's Take: The final song in episode  #37  (13:48): For some reason the opening piano notes remind me of the beginning of Bob Seger's We've Got Tonight: Kind of feels like Bohemian Rhapsody; quiet interludes build up into a heavy drop. If you're spinning a set, you may want to isolate the loud parts, get in and out quickly. Or lay a looped instrumental from another song over the softer parts, like we did with Steve Aoki & will.i.am's Born To Get Wild . Some other key-compatible tracks: Break Free - Ariana Grande ft. Lalala - Y2K, bbno$

tempo: 65 bpm bpm range: 60 bpm  to  65 bpm ,  65 bpm  to  70 bpm the dj's take: Opening track in #37 : Every time I hear 'sha-sha-sha' in this song, it makes me think of Dale Gribble from King of the Hill. Someone made a video of every time he says this: No better way to emphasize a point. I give it a slight edge over John Madden's 'Boom!' Pursuit of Happiness - Kid Cudi ft. MGMT, Ratatat

tempo: 58 bpm bpm range: 55 bpm  to  60 bpm the dj's take: Track #2 in mix 36 (1:53): Cool breakdown of how the beat was made: As for the placement within the mix, it's a nice little bridge from something slower and dreamy into the upbeat pop that energizes a crowd. I bet at least a few people will sing along on any given night; worth a longer-term spot in the rotation. Some other key-compatible music: Circles - Post Malone Never Be Like You - Flume ft.
