The BMC Top 5 for August 2010

Ever since I started this blog, I’ve posted lists of top pop songs based on my own feelings and observations. But I always wrote them knowing that the perspective of one man is limited. Fortunately, the traffic on this site has picked up over the past few months, so from now on, I’ll be posting the Beat Match City Top 5 every week and every month based on what readers are reading the most.

Long story short, be sure to visit this site every 8th, 15th and 22nd of each month for the top 5 from the previous week. And if you want a longer term view of what’s hot on the charts, visit this site the first day of every month for the top 5 from the previous month.

Anyway, without further ado, here’s the BMC Top 5 for August 2010. Click on the track name for analysis and MP3s:

1. Love the Way You Lie - Eminem ft. Rihanna

2. Airplanes - B.o.B ft. Hayley Williams

3. Magic - B.o.B ft. Rivers Cuomo

4. Dynamite - Taio Cruz

5. Club Can’t Handle Me - David Guetta and Flo Rida

So there you have it. Keep visiting the site, and keep giving us your feedback so we can make the Top 5 bigger and better.

Throwback Thursday: Billie Jean - Michael Jackson

Tempo: 117 bpm Bpm range: 115 to 120 bpm The DJ’s Take:  An iconic pop track that any dj should have in their rotation. No excuses. A good list of key-compatible songs to mix or mash up with, including: Solo Dance - Martin Jensen Routine - Alan Walker x David Whistle Safe And Sound - Justice D.A.N.C.E. - Justice Say My Name - ODESZA ft. Zyra This Town (Tiesto Remix) - Niall Horan Welcome - Martin Garrix & Julian Jordan Get Lucky - Daft Punk If you're willing to drop a couple bpm's, blending this with Poison - Bell Biv Devoe is pure gold. Download or stream the song: Apple Music iTunes Amazon

Starboy - The Weeknd, Daft Punk

tempo: 93 bpm bpm range: 90 to 95 bpm The DJ's Take: Song #6 in our chapter 53 mix (11:38): As we saw with the I Wonder lead-in, that percussion-only intro makes this easier to mix and to play around with. Also melts nicely into Nine Inch Nails' Closer . In fact, even though I know when the transition's coming, it still creeps up on me a bit. Still worth a spot in your prime-time pop rotation. Some other key-compatible music: Old Thing Back - Matoma & Notorious BIG Back To Sleep - Chris Brown One More Chance (Remix) - Notorious BIG Shoop - Salt N Pepa Out of the Woods - Taylor Swift This Is How We Do - Katy Perry Na Na - Trey Songz Paranoid - Ty Dolla $ign No Games - Serani Download or stream Starboy: spotify playlist amazon

Famous - Kanye West

Speed: 87 bpm bpm range: 85 bpm to 90 bpm The DJ's Take: The leadoff song in our tenthirtynine mix: Good illustration of the saying 'less is more.' Simple, minimal beat with a heavier version of the drums from Good Morning and then a nice little breakdown into the Sister Nancy sample . A proper thump for almost any weekend gig. Try mixing with tracks like: Call Out My Name - The Weeknd Plain Jane - A$AP Ferg Feel Me Flow - Naughty By Nature No Limit - G-Eazy ft. A$AP Rocky, Cardi B Rude Boy - Rihanna Izzo (H.O.V.A.) - Jay-Z Empire State of Mind - Jay-Z ft.
