Temptations - Ty Dolla $ign ft. Kid Cudi

tempo: 81-82 bpm the dj's take: Leadoff song in session 61 Yes, music is subjective, and not every track that could be a hit actually becomes a hit. But this is certainly hit-level, even if the reception was muted. Easy bounce that should translate just about anywhere. Melts nicely into Kali Uchis' telepatía . Some other key-compatible music: I Wanna Be Down - Brandy Paper Planes - MIA We Don't Care - Kanye West Ether - Nas Downtown - Anitta & J Balvin Chainsaw - Nick Jonas Messin' Around - Pitbull ft. No Ordinary Love - Sade

tempo: 83-84 bpm the dj's take: Song #3 in session 61 (2:42): The first time I heard this song was on tv in an ad for the movie Indecent Proposal , where Robert Redford plays a billionaire who offers a million dollars to a couple (Woody Harrelson and Demi Moore) for one night with the wife. Even as a young teen, it felt like a perfect fit to me, despite never getting on the official soundtrack. Probably better suited for the bedroom than a pop set, but that extended vocal-free intro with the softly growling guitar is as mixable as it gets. Notice that I brought in No Ordinary Love as the drums cut out of Kali Uchis' telepatía ; no need to double up on the percussion and potentially create distortion. Then the transition into Brandy's I Wanna Be Down (which has its own vocal-free, guitar-laden intro) is money in the bank - strong mashup candidate for someone who appreciates the 90s. telepatía - Kali Uchis

tempo: 84 bpm the dj's take: Song #2 in session 61 (1:20): You could put Sade or Anita Baker over that beat and it would still be smooth as silk. But the Spanglish adds a little extra kick. I felt like it would fit in seamlessly with just about any r&b or adult contemporary, and this mix confirmed everything - easy transition out of Ty Dolla $ign's Temptations and then into Sade's No Ordinary Love . Never Be Like You - Flume ft. Kai

Speed: 60 bpm Recommended bpm range: 60 bpm to 65 bpm The DJ's Take: Leadoff song in mix 36 : Pretty seamless integration with Pursuit of Happiness - Kid Cudi ft. MGMT, Ratatat ; worth trying out as you're building up the energy in a pop set - or winding things down. Hopefully he'll be better known for this than his affinity for peaches . Update: Used this as track #2 in mix 60 (1:02): May have brought this one in a little abruptly, but good enough. I do like the transition going into Save Your Tears - The Weeknd - double up the tempo, and it sounds a little warped/trippy. I played around with the volume a few times before moving on. Some other key-compatible tracks: Out of Touch - Hall & Oates Everything We Need - Kanye West, Ant Clemons, Ty Dolla $ign Never Be Like You - Flume ft. Out of Touch - Hall & Oates

tempo: 116 bpm The DJ's Take: Song #8 in our #60 mix (12:16): Fits like a glove over Dua Lipa's New Rules . In fact, if you listen to the transition, it's hard to tell (at least at first) that there are two songs playing at the same time. One thing to keep in mind - when you're mixing into Out of Touch, don't necessarily aim to end the previous song right before Darryl Hall's vocals begin. Focus more on when the opening synths/keyboards come in after the percussion-heavy intro, about 0:16 in. Also, on the other end, I like getting out of Out of Touch at about the 2:49-2:50 mark, when the little interlude ends. A fun, almost seamless drop into another compatible Hall & Oates hit in Private Eyes . Here's how it looked in Logic Pro X : Some other key-compatible music: Everything We Need - Kanye West, Ant Clemons, Ty Dolla $ign Never Be Like You - Flume ft.
