dj mix/mashup: xxplosive & obsessed (Mariah Carey, Dr. Dre, Ariana Grande, Kanye West)

Made with Logic Pro at 88 bpm Still trying to find a spot for Blinding Lights ; thought I had something with Xxplosive , but upon closer listening, the basslines didn't quite match up for me (yes, I'm getting pickier). I actually had a longer version of this where I mixed break up with your girlfriend and Duran Duran's Come Undone ; they sound good together, but it felt extraneous, so I cut that out. And in case you were wondering - the blinking light in the intro to the video was a decoration at a bar I wandered into in downtown Seattle a couple months ago. Should've asked where to get one for my living room. Dj Cheat Sheet playlist (85 to 90 bpm) , 90 to 95 bpm

dj mix/mashup: waterfalls x i can love you like that (TLC, All-4-One, Monica)

Made with Logic Pro at 90 bpm Waterfalls and I Can Love You Like That have a key element in common - those guitars. Throw one on top of the other and you've got a groove. Vocal-only intro from Monica's Don't Take It Personal (Just One of Dem Days) adds the final touch without overwhelming anything. Dj Cheat Sheet playlist (85 to 90 bpm) , 90 to 95 bpm

Yandel 150 - Yandel, Feid

tempo: 84 bpm the DJ's take: Song title makes me think of a NASCAR race sponsored by Yandel. Maybe if I get famous enough one day, I'll be waving the checkered flag at the Taeho 250. Could sound interesting with Side to Side , Russian Roulette , Lucid Dreams , and Make It Hot . More ideas can be found here ; try them out for yourself and let me know if you find anything cool. download or stream Yandel 150: amazon

TQG - KAROL G, Shakira

tempo: 90 bpm the DJ's take: This could pair pretty well with Despacito , I Wanna Be Down , maybe Maneater (which has a lengthy instrumental intro). Dig around in the 85 to 90 and 90 to 95 bpm playlists and see if you can find some other interesting combinations. download or stream TQG: amazon

dj mix/mashup: STAY heartless (Justin Bieber, Kanye West, Jay-Z, Rick Ross)

Made with Logic Pro at 85 bpm STAY - The Kid Laroi, Justin Bieber Guess Who's Back - Scarface, Jay-Z, Beanie Sigel Heartless - Kanye West Aston Martin Music - Rick Ross, Chrisette Michelle I Like Dat - T-Pain, Kehlani In terms of matching tones note-for-note with multiple songs, this is one of my better efforts. The drum-less intro to STAY is the constant, and we stacked / subtracted layers as we went along. The hardest part of making these mashups / mini-mixes is having a lot of ideas, trying them out in the software, and ultimately realizing the best thing to do is keep it simple. Maybe we can build this into something bigger in the future. Key- and bpm-compatible playlist: 85 to 90 bpm

DJ mix/mashup: karma x kill bill (SZA, Drake, Lloyd Banks, Janet Jackson, Steve Lacy, Cam'ron)

Made with Logic Pro at 86 bpm Kill Bill - SZA Best I Ever Had - Drake Come Back to Me - Janet Jackson Bad Habit - Steve Lacy Karma - Lloyd Banks ft. Avant Is this a medley or a mashup? Or maybe neither; who knows. Best I Ever Had and Come Back to Me are sped up a bit (closer to 80 bpm), but no vocals, so they aren't getting the chipmunk treatment. On a side note, I never listened to Bad Habit all the way through until recently, and had no idea there was some beat-boxing at the end. So of course we threw that in for posterity. dj mix/mashup: gold [kiiara] x genie in a bottle [christina aguilera]

Made with Logic Pro at 87 bpm Not exactly how the transition went in mix #77 ; had to edit the Genie in a Bottle intro a little to cut out Christina Aguilera's vocals and make it more loop-able. A nice pairing - Gold has vocals and minimal percussion, and fits nicely over the Genie in a Bottle instrumental. Another good candidate for a full-on mashup or remix for someone who wants to dig in a little more. Key- and bpm-compatible playlist

dj mix/mashup: 6 man [drake] x devil in a new dress [kanye west, rick ross]

Made with Logic Pro at 82 bpm Clip from mix #69 - two big beats on top of each other, which I could've done a better job adjusting for a cleaner sound. But if you listen to the actual mix, the transition sounds smooth; my goal for this video was to create a loop that feels like the first draft of a mashup/remix. Worth building on for a future project. Key- and bpm-compatible playlist

DJ mix/mashup: Sexy Can I x Hey Ma (ft. Ray J, Cam'ron and Juelz Santana)

Made with Logic Pro at 87 bpm This is a bit of an oddity - the Hey Ma beat sounds so wholesome, and Sexy Can I is dripping with another kind of energy altogether. Works harmonically, but they're kind of like a musical oil and vinegar. Sexy Can I was in consideration for my session 77 mix , and ultimately wasn't used, but we got some mileage in the end. More proof that sometimes the out-takes can be as fun as the final product. Key- and bpm-compatible playlist

DJ mix: session 77 ft. Steve Lacy's Bad Habit (plus Outkast, Gnarls Barkley and more)

Made with Logic Pro at 87 bpm 16:18 of hiphop and pop music Check out some more mixes here . This episode was made using this playlist . Tracklist (start times in parentheses): 1. Bad Habit - Steve Lacy 2. Karma - Lloyd Banks ft. Avant (1:19) 3. Hey Ma - Cam'ron ft. Juelz Santana (3:53) 4. Gold - Kiiara (4:27) 5. Genie in a Bottle - Christina Aguilera (6:28) 6. DJ mix/mashup: bad habit x karma (ft. Steve Lacy and Lloyd Banks)

Made with Logic Pro at 87 bpm Blending Bad Habit with Hey Ma worked out well, and we brought up the possibility of mixing Bad Habit with Lloyd Banks' Karma , so I bit the bullet yet again and gave another $1.29 to Tim Cook in the name of science. Jackpot. This was an easy one - if you watch the video and see what I did in Logic Pro, it was pretty simple. Looks like we're about 30% into episode 77 of the sterling mercury show . Stay tuned. DJ mix/mashup: bad habit x hey ma (ft. Steve Lacy and Cam'ron)

Made with Logic Pro at 87 bpm So I openly wondered how Bad Habit would sound with Hey Ma , and then the concept became too interesting to leave alone. So I dropped a couple bucks on itunes, threw the two into Logic Pro, and let me tell you - the expression 'fits like a hand in glove' is an understatement. These two were meant to be together. In this case, we looped the Hey Ma instrumental section (starting 3:11 into the song) and did a simple beatmatch for ~100 seconds. Now imagine if someone did a proper mashup. At a bare minimum, that's a cool transition for your next pop/hiphop mix. Key- and bpm-compatible playlist

Bad Habit - Steve Lacy

tempo: 85 bpm the DJ's take: This one could sound interesting with Cam'ron's Hey Ma (instrumental-only starting at 3:11), or maybe even the intro to Karma . Good number of possibilities from 80 to 85 bpm and 85 to 90 . An earworm for sure. And also the anti-workout song - makes you want to take a lazy stroll to nowhere in particular. download or stream Bad Habit: amazon

DJ mix/mashup: your body's callin' x cheap thrills (Sia and R. Kelly)

Made with Logic Pro at 86 bpm Separating the man from the music, Your Body's Callin' is one of the great r&b singles of the 90s. Sampled in Biggie's Unbelievable , and a simple drumbeat you can beatmatch with just about anything. I liked how this bounced along with Cheap Thrills - almost felt like one song when they played together. From mix #75 ft. Harry Styles' As It Was and a-ha's Take On Me Key- and bpm-compatible playlist

Jimmy Cooks - Drake ft. 21 Savage

tempo: 78 bpm up until 1:39, 83 bpm after the DJ's take: If I were a streetballer, Jimmy Cooks would be my nom de rue (as opposed to nom de plume ). Lots of no-look passes and killer crossovers in my imaginary youtube mixtape. Could also work as an alternate title for Jimmy Butler's cooking show . I feel like that first 1:39 with the horns could sound cool with T.I.'s Ride Wit Me ; no real percussion-only sections in either one though, as far as I can tell. Maybe we'll take a closer look sometime - stay tuned (but don't hold your breath). download or stream Jimmy Cooks: amazon dj cheat sheet playlist (75 to 80 bpm) , dj cheat sheet playlist (80 to 85 bpm)

DJ mix/mashup: roxanne loves cheap thrills (ft. Harry Styles' As It Was x a-ha's Take On Me)

Made with Logic Pro at 86 bpm Quick note on what I did with Harry Styles' As It Was - the original plan was to use that 10 note drum-less synth intro on a loop. But things got a bit more complicated when I realized the 10th note came with a heavy drum hit. So we did a little surgery, subbed in the same note without the drum, and cut it up to get a decent imitation of what I wanted in the beginning. If you'd like to have a go, Amazon download links are below. Or feel free to do something totally different with the songs in the relevant DJ Cheat Sheet playlist . Toosie Slide - Drake

tempo: 81-82 bpm the dj’s take:  Song #1 in episode #69 of our mix show: A little confession - the key for this one is a little off vs. the other songs in the mix. You could probably get away with that in a live setting. But I'm a little OCD, you know? So that's why I went with Can't Have Everything right after; very percussion-heavy, so it's harder to tell. Sometimes you need to play a trick to make the magic happen. Heat Waves - Glass Animals

tempo: 81 bpm the dj’s take:  Song #4 in episode #69 of our mix show (5:10): Quick mixing tip: this one has a naturally elevated decibel level. Not loud; just rich and heavy. So I dropped the volume on it, just to blend in a bit better with everything else: I imagine this would be a hit in the bars - chorus that's easy to sing or shout, and a lot of spotify streams. If you're in the 80 to 85 bpm range, you can mix with: Sneakin' - Drake, 21 Savage [85 bpm] Used To This - Future, Drake [83 bpm] Throw Some D's - Rich Boy [80 bpm] Oh Boy - Cam'ron, Juelz Santana [83 bpm] Devil in a New Dress - Kanye West, Rick Ross [79-80 bpm] The Rain (Supa Dupa Fly) - Missy Elliott [80 bpm] Say Something - Timbaland, Drake [80 bpm] 6 Foot 7 Foot - Lil Wayne, Cory Gunz [84 bpm] Can't Have Everything - Drake [83 bpm] Sing About Me, I'm Dying of Thirst - Kendrick Lamar [83 bpm] Toosie Slide - Drake [81-82 bpm] Safe With Me - Gryffin, Audrey Mika [85 bp...
