Top 5 mashups

Newest remix/mashup is finally up (ft. Jay-Z and Santigold):

The BMC Top 5 for February 2025

1. Logic Pro Tutorial: How to Start a New DJ Mix 2. Logic Pro Tutorial: Going Back in Time (the Revert Function) 3. Logic Pro Tutorial: Selecting all (or multiple) regions in a project 4. dj mix/mashup: Knock Like Us - Kendrick Lamar, GZA, Ini Kamoze 5. Logic Pro Tutorial: Big Pimpin (how to make your own instrumental)

Big Pimpin Instrumental (How to make your own with Logic Pro)

Made with Logic Pro at 68 bpm Quick video on making a vocal-free instrumental from the original song. A little background: back when I was spinning vinyl (around 2002-2006), it was common to buy a single, and the single would come with an instrumental. Here's an example from my collection: Not as simple today, because those voice-free beats are hard (if not impossible) to find - as far as I know. Luckily, software like Logic Pro makes it easier to sift through a song, find the parts you like, then cut them out and loop them to make your own instrumental. In the case of Jay-Z's Big Pimpin, it's easy to just take the first few bars and call it a day. But for the purposes of a mix, remix or mashup, I wanted to find slightly quieter, flute-free bars that don't overwhelm the other tracks we're using. In this video, I found a couple pieces toward the tail end of the song and turned them into a 56 second mix with Day N Nite and What's Poppin.

Logic Pro Tutorial: Going Back in Time (the Revert Function) 4. dj mix/mashup: Always Exchange My Baby (ft. Mariah Carey and Bryson Tiller) 5. Logic Pro Tutorial: Adding An Echo Effect (ft. The BMC Top 5 for December 2024

1. Logic Pro Tutorial: How to Start a New DJ Mix 2. Logic Pro Tutorial: Going Back in Time (the Revert Function) 3. Logic Pro Tutorial: Selecting all (or multiple) regions in a project 4. dj mix/mashup: Always Exchange My Baby (ft. Mariah Carey and Bryson Tiller) 5. Logic Pro Tutorial: Adding An Echo Effect (ft. Kanye West's I Wonder and The Weeknd's Starboy)

dj mix/mashup: Gorgeous Juicy Fruit (Kanye West, Mtume, DJ Snake, Rich The Kid, T.I.)

Made with Logic Pro at 95 bpm The mission for this one was take the drum-only intro to Juicy Fruit (sampled prominently in Notorious B.I.G.'s Juicy), find some drum-less loops from various songs in this playlist and this one , lay them over each other, and hope for the best. I think I did alright with the build-up, and the heavy guitar in Kanye's Gorgeous is a worthwhile pay-off.

circuit break - sterling mercury

tempo: 120 bpm The DJ’s Take: This is my take on a traditional breakbeat, originally made in 2021. As you'll hear, I am a fan of the arpeggiator effect. If you're looking to make your own beats, Logic Pro X is worth a download - it's been cool to learn through experimentation, and good old trial & error. I added this to a couple key- and bpm-compatible playlists on djcheatsheet.com: 115-120 bpm 120-125 bpm download or stream circuit break (for free): soundcloud

The BMC Top 5 for November 2024

Logic Pro Tutorial: Selecting all (or multiple) regions in a project 4. dj mix/mashup: Always Exchange My Baby (ft. Mariah Carey and Bryson Tiller) 5. dj mix/mashup: SORRY for Shaking Off My Bad Habits (ft. Mariah Carey, Ed Sheeran and Beyoncé)

dj mix/mashup: SORRY for Shaking Off My Bad Habits (ft. Mariah Carey, Ed Sheeran and Beyoncé)

Made with Logic Pro at 132 bpm Title of this mix doesn't make much sense, but we managed to fit in the names of all 3 songs somehow. I'd been wanting to lay that percussion-less intro to Ed Sheeran's Bad Habits over something, and it was nice to finally get around to it. A simple yet effective blend overall; I like how this came out. Songs come from this playlist and this one .

The BMC Top 5 for October 2024

1. Logic Pro Tutorial: How to Start a New DJ Mix 2. dj mix/mashup: Always Exchange My Baby (ft. Mariah Carey and Bryson Tiller) 3. Logic Pro Tutorial: Going Back in Time (the Revert Function) 4. Logic Pro Tutorial: Selecting all (or multiple) regions in a project 5. dj mix/mashup: RISE for One More Night (ft. T-Pain, Herb Alpert, Maroon 5, The Weeknd, Aphex Twin, and more)

dj mix/mashup: RISE for One More Night (ft. Fabolous & T-Pain's Baby Don't Go)

Made with Logic Pro at 98 bpm Credit for this one goes to the youtube algorithm - didn't know Rise was the sample used in Hypnotize until a week ago. But once I isolated the famous break and went through a couple playlists on djcheatsheet.com , it all came together fairly quickly. Especially after hearing Aphex Twin's Ageispolis and knowing right away they would sound good together. One of my favorite mashups in recent months. Especially the ending - feels good to finish strong.

Knock Like Us (Not Like Us mashup ft. Kendrick Lamar, GZA, Ini Kamoze and M83)

Made with Logic Pro at 101 bpm Quiet summer, but I had this in the back of my mind, and finally put something together. Wasn't as smooth a process as some other mixes/mashups ; tried to shoehorn in Kanye's Diamonds from Sierra Leone at the end (the beginning where Shirley Bassey sings 'diamonds are forever' ), but the backing instrumental was off-beat vs. the other songs, so we scrapped it. Wish I knew of a good way to fully isolate vocals from the beat in an individual song. Overall, I probably listened to this one too many times with headphones on. Started hearing how pitches in the different songs were a bit incompatible at times, but at a certain point you just say 'good enough.' Hopefully this is an interesting addition to the waves of Not Like Us mashups out there.

The BMC Top 5 for June 2024

Logic Pro Tutorial: Creating an echo effect (ft. Kanye West's I Wonder and The Weeknd's Starboy) 5. dj mix/mashup: Someone to Pour It Up (ft. Aaliyah, Mariah Carey, Jon B. + Babyface, Rihanna)

dj mix/mashup: Someone To Pour It Up (Aaliyah, Mariah Carey, Jon B. ft. Babyface, Rihanna)

Made with Logic Pro at 65 bpm Overall, we took a few songs from this playlist and this playlist , and had them meet in the middle at 65 bpm. I could listen to the chorus for Someone to Love on repeat, which basically sums up the entire second half of this mix. And a quick note - that zooming sound at 1:24 in the leadup to Someone to Love is called "Descending Below" in Logic Pro. Pretty good for transitions, and loud enough that you don't have to jack up the volume over your mix.

dj mix/mashup: Levels N 2 Deep (Avicii, Drake, SZA, Shawn Mendes)

Made with Logic Pro at 125 bpm Another project with origins in an old mix . We added in a couple extra songs from the original loop, and to make the transitions a little less abrupt, I put in some sound effects ("Boomerang Downer" and "Airfield" as software instruments in Logic Pro, in case you were wondering). Individual software instruments can get drowned out by finished audio tracks side-by-side, but things worked out in this one.
