Throwback Track: B*tch Please - Snoop Dogg ft. Xzibit and Nate Dogg

tempo: 95 bpm bpm range:   90  to  95 bpm ,  95  to  100 bpm The DJ’s Take: Did you know that before he was the host of MTV’s Pimp My Ride, Xzibit was actually a pretty good rapper? More importantly, this beat just bangs; one of my favorites from Dr. Dre. I remember making my first mixtapes 7 or 8 years ago and knowing I had to fit this track in somehow. If you dj hiphop, or you’re a self-proclaimed hiphop head, B*tch Please has to be in your library. No questions asked. Download the MP3: Bitch Please (Feat. Xzibit) [Explicit] DJs - mix this with: Roc The Mic [Explicit]

The BMC Top 5 for August 2010

Ever since I started this blog, I’ve posted lists of top pop songs based on my own feelings and observations. But I always wrote them knowing that the perspective of one man is limited. Fortunately, the traffic on this site has picked up over the past few months, so from now on, I’ll be posting the Beat Match City Top 5 every week and every month based on what readers are reading the most. Long story short, be sure to visit this site every 8th, 15th and 22nd of each month for the top 5 from the previous week. And if you want a longer term view of what’s hot on the charts, visit this site the first day of every month for the top 5 from the previous month. Anyway, without further ado, here’s the BMC Top 5 for August 2010. Click on the track name for analysis and MP3s: 1. Love the Way You Lie - Eminem ft. Rihanna 2. Airplanes - B.o.B ft. Hayley Williams 3. Magic - B.o.B ft. Rivers Cuomo 4. Dynamite - Taio Cruz 5. Club Can’t Handle Me - David Guetta an...

Right Above It - Lil Wayne ft. Drake

tempo: 76 bpm bpm range: 75 bpm to 80 bpm the DJ’s take:  This one is like hiphop cocaine - a loud, high-octane beat that's designed to drive a crowd into delirium. Worth spinning at a club gig, a sporting event, a rally, or a fighter jet exhibition. The presence of two major artists maximizes the recognizability factor; add it to the library for those moments when your set needs a boost. Try mixing with HUMBLE. - Kendrick Lamar and I Knew You Were Trouble. - Taylor Swift . download or stream the song: amazon itunes

Music Review: Just A Dream - Nelly

Speed: 90 bpm Recommended bpm range: 85 bpm to 90 bpm , 90 to 95 bpm The DJ’s Take: So I’m checking the Billboard Hot 100, and I see this single debuting at #12, and I’m thinking two things. First thought: Holy crap - Nelly’s still alive? Second thought: Interesting case of the country crossover. And by that, I mean that when I’m checking the charts, I see these random pop country tracks from groups like Lady Antebellum , and it reminds me that there are areas in the U.S. below the Mason-Dixon line and out west where people actually like the kind of music that features warm acoustic guitars. And that’s how Nelly got big last decade with hiphop-and-a-drop-of-country singles like Ride Wit Me . In other words, Just A Dream’s initial popularity makes more sense after you’ve thought about it a little bit. Personally, I see this as more of a song you listen to in the car with the windows down, versus something you dance to in a bar or club. But if you’re a dj, and you feel ...

B.M.F. (Blowin Money Fast) - Rick Ross

tempo: 70 bpm bpm range: 70 bpm to 75 bpm the DJ’s take: This is some seriously booming production that would’ve been better received a couple years ago, back when 70 - 75 bpm hiphop was all the rage. While I haven’t spun this, I can tell you a couple things based on a limited sample size - the people I know who like this are male, 20-27 years old, and their preferred method of listening to B.M.F. is booming it in their car stereo. So simply put, if you’re trying to get a group of ethnically ambiguous young women to dance at a club, don’t play this. But if you are spinning at a club in the hood and you feel like starting a fight, this just might get it done. Download the MP3: Amazon

Throwback Track: Push It - Salt N Pepa

Speed: 130 bpm Recommended bpm range: 125 to 130 bpm , 130 to 135 bpm The DJ’s Take: If there’s one song out there that makes people literally “dance like no one’s watching” at weddings and clubs, this just might be it. And that’s exactly why you need to have this in your music library. Push It to bad dancers is like a midriff-bearing halter top to BBW s with tramp stamps - they can’t resist the call, even if it kills the rest of us. Download the song: Amazon DJs - turn on key adjust and mix this with: U Can’t Touch This - MC Hammer , Right Round - Flo Rida , Club Can’t Handle Me - Flo Rida , If U Seek Amy - Britney Spears , I Kissed A Girl - Katy Perry

Music Review: Just The Way You Are - Bruno Mars

Speed: 109 bpm Recommended bpm range: 105 to 110 bpm , 110 to 115 bpm The DJ’s Take: It’s not too often that you see a new and faster pop track that isn’t in the 100 - 105 bpm range, or 115 - 130 . But it’s cool too, because that means you have more potential songs you can mix it with, depending on the speed you’re mixing at (see my recommendations below). As far as the song itself goes, I like the shuffling break beat, and Bruno Mars is a solid vocalist. Maybe a little on the touchy-feely, sentimental side for the club, although I wouldn’t be surprised if an electro remix pops up at some point. But at the very least, it’s worth a spot on your mixtape or demo. Download the MP3: Amazon DJs - mix this with: Motown Philly - Boyz II Men (if mixing at ~112 bpm), Nothin On You - B.o.B ft. Bruno Mars (if mixing at ~106 bpm)
