Music Review: Just A Dream - Nelly

Speed: 90 bpm

Recommended bpm range: 85 bpm to 90 bpm, 90 to 95 bpm

The DJ’s Take: So I’m checking the Billboard Hot 100, and I see this single debuting at #12, and I’m thinking two things. First thought: Holy crap - Nelly’s still alive? Second thought: Interesting case of the country crossover.

And by that, I mean that when I’m checking the charts, I see these random pop country tracks from groups like Lady Antebellum, and it reminds me that there are areas in the U.S. below the Mason-Dixon line and out west where people actually like the kind of music that features warm acoustic guitars. And that’s how Nelly got big last decade with hiphop-and-a-drop-of-country singles like Ride Wit Me. In other words, Just A Dream’s initial popularity makes more sense after you’ve thought about it a little bit.

Personally, I see this as more of a song you listen to in the car with the windows down, versus something you dance to in a bar or club. But if you’re a dj, and you feel like finding out for yourself, turn on the key adjust, slow this down a little bit, and mix it with Rude Boy and Empire State of Mind.

Tempo: 117 bpm Bpm range: 115 to 120 bpm The DJ’s Take:  An iconic pop track that any dj should have in their rotation. No excuses. A good list of key-compatible songs to mix or mash up with, including: Solo Dance - Martin Jensen Routine - Alan Walker x David Whistle Safe And Sound - Justice D.A.N.C.E. - Justice Say My Name - ODESZA ft. Zyra This Town (Tiesto Remix) - Niall Horan Welcome - Martin Garrix & Julian Jordan Get Lucky - Daft Punk If you're willing to drop a couple bpm's, blending this with Poison - Bell Biv Devoe is pure gold. tempo: 93 bpm bpm range: 90 to 95 bpm The DJ's Take: Song #6 in our chapter 53 mix (11:38): As we saw with the I Wonder lead-in, that percussion-only intro makes this easier to mix and to play around with. Also melts nicely into Nine Inch Nails' Closer . In fact, even though I know when the transition's coming, it still creeps up on me a bit. Still worth a spot in your prime-time pop rotation. Some other key-compatible music: Old Thing Back - Matoma & Notorious BIG Back To Sleep - Chris Brown One More Chance (Remix) - Notorious BIG Shoop - Salt N Pepa Out of the Woods - Taylor Swift This Is How We Do - Katy Perry Na Na - Trey Songz Paranoid - Ty Dolla $ign No Games - Serani Download or stream Starboy: spotify playlist amazon

Famous - Kanye West

Speed: 87 bpm bpm range: 85 bpm to 90 bpm The DJ's Take: The leadoff song in our tenthirtynine mix: Good illustration of the saying 'less is more.' Simple, minimal beat with a heavier version of the drums from Good Morning and then a nice little breakdown into the Sister Nancy sample . A proper thump for almost any weekend gig. Try mixing with tracks like: Call Out My Name - The Weeknd Plain Jane - A$AP Ferg Feel Me Flow - Naughty By Nature No Limit - G-Eazy ft.
