Music Review: Just A Dream - Nelly

Speed: 90 bpm

Recommended bpm range: 85 bpm to 90 bpm, 90 to 95 bpm

The DJ’s Take: So I’m checking the Billboard Hot 100, and I see this single debuting at #12, and I’m thinking two things. First thought: Holy crap - Nelly’s still alive? Second thought: Interesting case of the country crossover.

And by that, I mean that when I’m checking the charts, I see these random pop country tracks from groups like Lady Antebellum, and it reminds me that there are areas in the U.S. below the Mason-Dixon line and out west where people actually like the kind of music that features warm acoustic guitars. And that’s how Nelly got big last decade with hiphop-and-a-drop-of-country singles like Ride Wit Me. In other words, Just A Dream’s initial popularity makes more sense after you’ve thought about it a little bit.

Personally, I see this as more of a song you listen to in the car with the windows down, versus something you dance to in a bar or club. But if you’re a dj, and you feel like finding out for yourself, turn on the key adjust, slow this down a little bit, and mix it with Rude Boy and Empire State of Mind.

ROCKSTAR - DaBaby ft. Roddy Ricch

tempo: 90 bpm The DJ's Take: Song #1 in our chapter 51 mix (made in Logic Pro X ): Big bass, so I had to be strategic about where to transition out and into Rihanna's Work . A little more of an in-depth look, plus some thoughts on its shelf life in a dj's rotation: Bottom line, when nightlife at college bars picks up again, this will likely be in heavy rotation. Some other key-compatible tracks: Thrift Shop - Macklemore & Ryan Lewis ft. Wanz Public Service Announcement - Jay-Z Con Calma - Daddy Yankee, Snow River - Eminem, Ed Sheeran Bella y Sensual - Romeo Santos, Daddy Yankee, Nicky Jam In My Bed (So So Def Remix) - Dru Hill Gold Digger - Kanye West ft. Bitches N Marijuana - Chris Brown, Tyga ft. ScHoolboy Q

Speed: 98 bpm The DJ's Take: People may complain that Chris Brown and Tyga keep coming out with tiny variations of the same song. I think it's smart - encourage dj's to play three or four of your singles in a row, and then mash them up on soundcloud without having to worry whether or not they sound right together. Mix with tracks like Loyal , Ayo , I Don't F**k With You , Team , and U Know What's Up , and you've got a key-compatible 15 to 20 minute set that should keep things moving.
