Music Review: Winner - Jamie Foxx ft. Justin Timberlake and T.I.
Speed: 90 bpm
The DJ’s Take: I like to call this one a comeback track. Jamie Foxx, JT, and T.I. have all had success and taken some time off, and now they’re using this single to see if they still got the magic. I think they do. The beat has a bounce buoyed by the little underlying piano riffs, which remind me of Cam’Ron’s Oh Boy from several years ago. In fact, turn on key adjust, slow this down a little, speed up Oh Boy a little, and that takes care of another few minutes in your dj mix. Most of the youth probably don’t remember Oh Boy, but that’s ok - get the crowd back with the next track.
On a side note, I can see this being played in an NBA arena in the near future. Fits perfectly, and if it cracks top 10 on the Billboard Hot 100 for a couple months while inspiring ladies and little kids to get busy for the Crowd Cam on the Jumbotron, it’ll be a mainstay.
Edit: You know, if I were a gambling man, and not having done any research on the topic, I’d bet that the person who produced this track also produced Rihanna’s Hard. Similar booming fake horns at the beginning, followed by a steady piano-driven instrumental at basically the same bpm. Either that, or the producer of Winner said ‘Oh well... I got paid already, and I don’t feel like doing a lot of work, so I’ll just grab that beat from Hard, change the key, and make it bounce.’ Sounds about right, either way.
